1. When creating a Photoshop file ready for print, there are a few steps you need to follow. Here is our step-by-step guide to make your Photoshop file ready for print.

    If you have the ability to use InDesign, as well as Photoshop, we would recommend using InDesign. InDesign is optimised for designing publications. Whereas, Photoshop is optimised to edit Photos.

    1. Creating your document. It is important that you choose the correct UK paper size. To view UK paper sizes click the button below. Once you have the correct UK paper size. Go to file, then new. This window will pop up. At the top select print, choose from one of the pre-sets, or enter your own dimensions in the width and height section. Make sure your colour mode setting is set to CMYK and your resolution is set to 300dpi.

    2. It is now time to set up bleed. To set up bleed follow these steps. When adding bleed to Photoshop we will need to use the rulers. To show rulers go to view, show rulers. These rulers will pop up. Click inside the ruler and drag the line so it snaps to the page edge. You will need to repeat this for all sides. When doing the top and bottom of your page, you will need to use the top ruler. Once you have dragged all rulers into your document it should look like this. We will then need to add in the bleed section. Go to image, canvas size, this window will pop up. Add 6mm to both sides of your canvas. Then press ok. This is what your canvas should now look like with 3mm bleed.

    You can now add your design. Make sure you keep all important elements and text within the ruler guides. Extend any coloured elements or images that wish to go to the page edge, beyond the ruler guide, to the edge of the canvas. This will create your bleed.

    Once you are happy with your design it is time to save it as a PDF. Go to file, print, select adobe PDF, in the printer section, then click on print settings, this window will pop up, in the default settings, make sure that you have chosen high quality print. Then scroll down to printing marks and make sure that both crop marks and registration marks are both ticked from here then press print, and choose where to save your PDF.
